Opening a dispensary means coordinating licensing, build-out, staffing and inventory at the same time. Technology is easy to leave until late — and painful to fix after opening. This checklist covers the systems to have working before your first customer walks in.
An important note
Cannabis rules vary by state and locality and change over time. This is a technology checklist, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with your licensing authority and qualified legal counsel.
Domain, email and accounts
- Business domain registered in the company's name, with MFA on the registrar.
- Business email on that domain, with MFA for every account.
- A record of who owns and administers each system — not just the person who set it up.
Website and digital storefront
- Age-gating where required in your jurisdiction.
- Accurate store details: address, hours, pickup information and contact.
- Menu or catalog experience that is easy to browse on a phone.
- Analytics in place from day one so you have a baseline.
POS and inventory
- POS configured with the right staff roles and permissions.
- Inventory workflows tested end to end before opening — receiving, sales, adjustments.
- Integrations between POS, inventory and your online menu verified, so customers see what's actually in stock.
- A plan for what staff do if the POS or internet goes down.
Security and access
- MFA on every business-critical system.
- Individual staff logins — no shared accounts.
- Onboarding and offboarding steps so access is granted and removed promptly.
- Backups and account-recovery options documented.
Local presence
- Google Business Profile and maps listings accurate before opening.
- Consistent name, address and phone across every listing.
- A plan for collecting and responding to reviews.
Operations after opening
Once open, the technology needs ongoing attention: integration health, inventory alerts, support for staff, and someone coordinating the vendors behind each system. Approved FAQ assistants and internal knowledge tools can take routine questions off your team — within the limits your rules allow.
How EIGNUM supports licensed cannabis retailersCompliance readiness
Assessing your technology and operational controls against applicable requirements before opening — and periodically afterwards — reduces surprises. That is a readiness assessment, not a guarantee of legal compliance.
